About Nils Maier

I'm a student at the Technische Universität Braunschweig / Germany and live in the nearby city Wolfsburg [DE] which you might know as the "Capital of Volkswagen".

In 2009 I got my Bachelor of Science degree in computer sciences from the TU Braunschweig and am currently free-lancing while also pursuing a MSc. degree in computer sciences.

I do a lot of computer related stuff, such as coding DownThemAll! and other small projects, submitting patches to various third-party projects and administering some servers.

Skills

My knowledge and skills include, but are not limited to:

Projects

My main project at the moment is DownThemAll! - a feature-rich Download Manager/Accelerator for Firefox and other applications.
Some of my other projects are hosted with this site, others may be hosted elsewhere.
I did some development of e.g. Image tools as well... E.g. check out SimilarImages

I'm not an Open Source nutjob per se, as in my opinion everybody should be free to license his code under his terms. I have a GitHub site where I plan to host all or at least most of my open source efforts.

Furthermore I occasionally report and fix bugs in various mozilla projects, incl. Firefox or addon.mozilla.org.
I'm also a volunatary addon editor, reviewing addons submitted to addon.mozilla.org before they can become public.

Freedom and Privacy

Speaking of freedom, I advocate liberty and privacy rights.
Our German government unfortunately tries everything to undermine our civil rights and take away our privacy.
This is one of the reasons I have operated several and still operate a TOR server.

Right now the most pressing laws were either overturned (Vorratsdatenspeicherung) or postponed (Internetzensurgesetz), but that doesn't mean politicians won't take another run at those.

As I'm a pretty lazy person do not expect me to update this page regularly.

Paid Work

I regularly receive offers to work on Extensions, Webapps or customizations to existing software. Being a student means that some extra money is always welcome, but also that my time is pretty limited. Not to mention that I'm not willing to relocate for a job at this time.

So if you have some challenging short term projects and you're willing to pay appropriately then feel free to contact me. If you, on the other hand, have a trivial, long term, low budget project please don't bother contacting me. ;(
Oh, and of course, I'm not a web-designer, as demonstrated by this very site.

Contact

I don't like to receive phishy/spam/advertisement mails. Those mails won't be read anyway.

Complaining loudly via email doesn't help either. Such mails will likely be ignored as well.

Be polite, use an appropriate and describing subject and clearly state your matter, and I promise I will respond as soon as time permits.

Please note: do not send your email to both addresses; Sending once is enough.
